WORKSHOP DETAILS
Traditionally, supervision practice for education, health and social care professions is framed by three different models: psychotherapy-based; developmental and social role. Alongside these models, creative approaches and expressive arts methods in supervision can provide alternative means of exploring the dynamics of professional practice. Engaging in a non-talking process during supervision can create a shift or a new awareness behind a work-related issue. These approaches can be used to validate and enhance a supervisee’s experience and promote a different understanding of reflexive practice.

The Board took these values and worked them into a set of guiding principles. This year’s CPD Event, to be facilitated by Elisabeth Shaw, builds on last year’s work and, at the same time, stands alone. “Working with and across the Boundaries in Supervision – defining our ethical code”
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:
This idea of this workshop emerged from the Board after a lively and energetic discussion on the importance of having an ethics document that is unique and reflective of our association and our diverse membership. Using an Open Systems approach we will be working in small and large groups to contemplate a variety of ethical questions, to finally emerge with some principles that will influence the reshaping of our Ethical Code.
Ultimately, we will gain an understanding of the complexity of ethics, refine our concept of ethical principles as they relate to supervision and learn about the benefits of Open Systems as a creative and democratic process of streamlining ideas.

This workshop focuses on the complexity of clinical governance and ethical maturity in contemporary service delivery. We will consider the philosophical underpinnings of ethical engagement and research on why people transgress or become ethically impaired. The key role that supervisors can play in clinical governance will be explored, and how embracing some of the critical tasks can enhance practice overall. This workshop will be an opportunity to prepare and pre-empt, and/or reflect on past experience with a view to enhancing competency in these difficult areas.

“Love and Fear in Supervision”
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
This workshop will be based on Robin’s chapter in Passionate Supervision. His experience is that fear comes into our lives in ways that don’t obviously look like fear ‐ such as blame, criticism, comparisons, giving unsolicited advice, the need to be right, and shame. All these can operate at a subtle level in the supervisory relationship.
“We will examine our core beliefs as supervisors and will see how well these support us when taking ‘leaps into the unknown’. We will also explore the issue of fear within supervision, both ours and of our supervisees, and the role this plays. We will also identify some risks and uncertainties associated with supervising in order to strengthen ourselves. Lastly, we will focus on taking a ‘supervisory attitude’ in our work, so that we can channel our compassion for our supervisees ‐ to ourselves!”
Using the safety of the group we will bring aspects of our work where we have felt disempowered to see if there is parallel process of fear in the system and find creative ways of moving beyond it. The workshop will focus mostly on fear because Robin’s core belief is that the love is always there like the sun, but it is the clouds of fear that stop us experiencing it.“

Creative Supervision Day
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:
Discover and rediscover the fun, relief and power of creative process to relax, restore and provide insights into our counselling work. A series of reflective writing, drawing, collagé and other art exercises will be facilitated and discussed as methods for supervisory practice. This day will be a highly interactive and reflective experience. No artistic talent is required – just an open mind and preparedness to try new things.

Narrative Approaches to Supervision
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:
The Narrative approach to supervision offers the possibility of new and sometimes different conversations to emerge about the therapeutic and supervisory experience. Collective narrative practice methodologies (such as the Tree of Life, Team of Life and Journey of Life) are used to enhance the knowledge and expertise of workers. They have been developed through collaborations with diverse cultural communities. Key narrative principles and practices as well as innovations from the field of narrative supervision will be shared and discussed during this one-day workshop so that participants can put them into their own practice.

Shame and Power in Supervision
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:
Shame and power may seem unlikely partners for a professional development day on the topic of supervision. Yet, shame is a great motivator helping us find strategies to avoid exposure while supervision is a process which is asking us to reveal not only our work but ourselves. Shame is likely, then, to have some influence on what we reveal in supervision and how we do that.
This CPD day offers the opportunity to consider shame as one of the factors which contributes to the quality of human relating. During the first part of the workshop we will work towards a relational understanding of shame, drawing out implications for our supervision work and how a better awareness of how we are impacted by shame may lead to better supervision. Since power and shame are often connected, the second part of the workshop will address how power operates in the supervision dyad, how it influences the ability of the supervisee to be fully open to the process of supervision. Finally shame and power will be explored as these themes relate to governance, management and ethical transgressions.

Supervisors are required to lead by example (modeling, mentoring, influencing) such that supervisees stay ethically robust in their work, fostering practice wisdom and ethical maturity. At times, supervisors are also working with people who struggle in this regard; indeed supervisors may also struggle themselves. This workshop will focus on the philosophical underpinnings of ethical engagement and research on why people transgress or become ethically impaired. The key role that supervisors play in clinical governance will be explored, with specific reference to balancing on the clinical support/management tightrope. Consideration will be given to interventions for impaired practitioners, such as when to train and when to performance manage, when to support and when to report. These are very difficult areas of practice, and supervisors may find themselves in the front line of change but insufficiently prepared or supported to follow through and still be standing in the end. This one day workshop will be an opportunity to prepare and pre-empt, and/or reflect on past experience with a view to enhancing competency in these difficult areas.

About Michelle and workshop overview:
On her learning journey, Dr Michelle Mulvihill has gathered wisdom and mastered skills in several fields – psychology, counselling, adult learning and training, leadership and organisational development – and brings them as resources to her professional practice. As both an organisational psychologist and counselling psychologist, her work often takes her to spaces where differences can quickly erupt into conflict, if not dealt with properly. As a supervisor of clinical and pastoral work, her best resource is herself because she continues to integrate her learning and practice through ongoing energetic research and her capacity to identify and focus on what practitioners need to learn to engage in effective and satisfying work.
There are conversations with others in our professional practices that we tell ourselves we need to have in order to maintain appropriate standards of care, ensure safety, and guard each person’s integrity. Yet we delay or avoid these conversations, hoping that the situation will be resolved somehow, without such an intervention. In Courageous Conversation in Supervisory Practice, Michelle will enable participants to identify those conversations, gain clear perceptions and understanding of the dynamics of the situation, and learn tools for engaging with others constructively. The workshop will be interactive in nature, relying on the experiences of participants, and engaging all in not only knowing the tools but unpacking this particular toolbox and practice in use of particular tools for particular settings.

In this workshop Daphne will discuss the nature of reflective practice, where it fits with other supervision methods and how it contributes to best practice. She will also outline three different types of reflection (technical, practice and critical) and give examples of their application using a range of reflective tools.
